The Origins of Salt Therapy
Dry salt therapy is a natural, safe, and science-supported, drug-free treatment. Studies indicate that inhaling dry salt micro-particles may provide relief from various respiratory and skin conditions while also reducing stress, anxiety, and fatigue.
The inhaled salt micro-particles reach the deepest parts of the lungs, helping to reduce systemic inflammation, clear airways, dissolve phlegm and combat microorganisms that contribute to infections. The salt also strengthens the immune system. Any remaining micro-particles are absorbed by the exposed skin, helping to address conditions like acne, psoriasis, eczema, and rosacea.
Our salt lounge provides a calming environment that may also ease stress, lessen headaches, support better sleep, and encourage natural detoxification, helping you feel more relaxed and balanced.
Salt therapy began in Eastern European salt mines, where workers noticed they experienced fewer respiratory issues and had healthier skin. This sparked interest in the natural healing properties of salt-rich air.
In the 1800s, Dr. Feliks Boczkowski opened a health resort in a Polish salt mine, using underground conditions to treat breathing problems. Over time, doctors and researchers across Europe began studying the benefits of salt caves, leading to new therapeutic approaches like speleotherapy and subterraneotherapy.
By the 1980s, scientists in Russia developed technology to mimic the salt cave environment above ground, marking the start of modern halotherapy. Today, salt therapy is used worldwide for its potential to support respiratory wellness, skin health, and relaxation.
What is Salt Therapy?

Salt therapy can help athletes breathe easier, recover faster, and reduce inflammation by clearing airways, supporting lung function, and promoting relaxation.
Types of Salt Therapy
Salt therapy falls into two main categories: wet and dry.
Wet salt therapy involves salt combined with water. Common examples include saline sprays, saltwater gargles, neti pots, salt baths, scrubs, and flotation tanks—many of which are already used in everyday wellness routines, even if not labeled as "salt therapy."
Dry salt therapy, on the other hand, uses pure, dry salt in spaces without moisture or humidity. This type is typically experienced in specially designed salt rooms or salt caves—terms that refer more to the design and atmosphere than to function. According to the Salt Therapy Association, any indoor, man-made setting offering dry salt therapy is generally referred to as a “salt room.”
Key Approaches
There are two key approaches to dry salt therapy:
Active Salt Rooms (Halotherapy)
Active rooms use a halogenerator—a machine that grinds pharmaceutical-grade salt into microparticles and releases them into the air. These airborne salt particles are inhaled and absorbed through the skin, which can help support respiratory and skin health. This modern method is called Halotherapy. At Revive, we offer active salt therapy in our community salt lounge.
Passive Salt Rooms (Inspired by Speleotherapy)
Passive rooms are filled with decorative salt—like Himalayan salt—but do not use a halogenerator. While these spaces aim to recreate the atmosphere of natural salt caves, they lack the controlled salt aerosol found in active rooms. Passive rooms offer a calming, peaceful space ideal for relaxation and meditation but do not provide the same therapeutic benefits as halotherapy.
While both types of rooms have their own merits, true dry salt therapy’s benefits—particularly for respiratory and skin health—come from inhaling microscopic salt particles produced by a halogenerator. That’s what separates active halotherapy from passive salt room experiences.

What is a halo generator?
At Revive Salt Lounge, authentic halotherapy begins with a medical-grade halo generator, the essential technology that transforms salt therapy from a relaxing environment into a true wellness modality.
A halo generator finely grinds pharmaceutical-grade sodium chloride into microscopic dry salt particles and gently disperses them into the air at controlled levels throughout the session. This process allows guests to naturally inhale the salt aerosol, creating a clean, mineral-rich atmosphere designed to support respiratory comfort, skin health, and overall relaxation.
What makes halotherapy effective is particle size and consistency. For salt to remain airborne and be easily inhaled, particles must be extremely small — typically in the sub-2-micron range, with many particles closer to 1 micron or below. At this size, the salt stays suspended in the air rather than settling on surfaces, allowing for even distribution and a smooth, breathable experience throughout the room. Larger particles, while visually beautiful in salt-designed spaces, behave differently and do not create the same inhalation-based environment.
Revive Salt Lounge uses a professional and medical grade Halo Generator system, engineered to deliver a consistent therapeutic salt output tailored to the size of the room. The result is a serene space where the air itself becomes part of the experience — light, pure, and intentionally crafted. Whether guests are seeking respiratory support, skin balance, an immune boost or simply deep rest, the halo generator ensures each session is both calming and purpose-driven, offering a refined approach to salt therapy that goes beyond ambiance and into true immersion.
